Madison Heights Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was given by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, the beginning of the end of slavery wouldn’t be recognized until more than two years later – June 19, 1865 – a date that later became known as Juneteenth.

The City of Madison Heights Human Relations and Equity Commission (HREC) will host our city’s first  Juneteenth Celebration on June 19, 2021 at Civic Center Park. It will be a live event featuring various educational exhibits, speakers, entertainment, food trucks, vendor booths and fun activities for kids. Plans are subject to change based upon Covid restrictions at the time.

This is a community-wide celebration for everyone. It will be a time for all races, nationalities, and religions to join hands and truthfully acknowledge a period in history that shaped and continues to influence our society today.

The Juneteenth Celebration will be free of charge to the community. However, staging an event of this magnitude has expenses that cannot be avoided. As a result, local sponsorship is vital to its success. Madison Heights Citizens United has been appointed by the HREC to raise funds for this celebration. We would greatly appreciate if you joined us in supporting this momentous event in our community. Specific information regarding sponsorship options is available below. We are planning a significant amount of publicity for this event through local newspapers and social media.
